Some movies do well where others fail. We now venture to look at the top 10 movies with the highest gross ever. Worth noting is the fact that most of these are actually recent movies. For each movie, we will mention the year of release and the global gross (in dollar terms). About the movie in the top position, we will say a little more. Worth mentioning is the fact that the data is bound to change: meaning that, at a later data, some movies may change their positions in this list, even as others are pushed by out of the list altogether (by new entrants). So the list is as per the data we currently have.
At number one, we have the Avatar, a movie released in the year 1999, and whose worldwide gross stands at a whopping $2.782 billion. The Avatar is in the science fiction genre, and it is distributed by 20thcentury fox. It was written by one James Cameron, who also directed it. It was produced on a $237 million budget – meaning that with a gross of $2.782 billion, it has definitely turned out to be a profitable venture for the folks who invested in it.
At number two, we have the Titanic, which was released in 1997, and whose worldwide gross has since hit $2.185 billion. This movie relives the story of the Titanic (the ship).
At number three, we have Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows (part II), whose year of production was 2011 and whose global gross is now at $1.328 billions. This movie is actually an enactment of a book by the same number and it has turned out to be a major commercial (and cultural) success. It is worth noting that the part 2 movie was more successful than Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows (Part 1) movie, which is to be found at number 15 (with a global gross of $956 million).
At the fourth position, we have the Avengers. This movie was released in 2012, to great fanfare. At $1.305 billion (and still counting), this is a movie that may soon end higher up in this list.
At the fifth position, we have the Transformers: Dark of the Moon, released in 2011, and whose global payout stands at $1.123 Billion.
At the sixth position, we have the Lord of the Rings: Return of the King, which was released in the year 2003, and which has since then grossed $1.119 billion worldwide.
The Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest comes in at the seventh position: with a global gross of $1.066 billion. This particular movie was released in the year 2006.
Moving on to the eighth position, we find the Toy Story 3, which hit the screens in the year 2010 and which has since them gross at $1.063 billion. This is clearly one of those movies that turn out to be huge commercial successes without too much hype.
At the ninth position is another Pirates of the Caribbean movie: this time the Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides. Released in 2011, this movie has grossed $1.043 billion.
Closing the top ten chart is the Star Wars Episode 1: the Phantom Menace. Released in the year 1999, this movie has since then grossed $1.027 billion worldwide.
