The Medical Field Is Amazing!
Over the last century or so there have been countless cases of extraordinary medical miracles. Whether it is a finger reattachment or even a tumor removal, the medical field has grown exponentially ever since the early 1900’s. A huge example of this was in a case involving Tom Lemm.
Tom Lemm was fifteen when he lost his arm to cancer. He had been battling with cancer since he was twelve years old. During the surgery to remove Toms arm, the doctors were able to do something that was new to the medical field. The surgeons that were operating on Tom were able to form a new shoulder out of tissue from his elbow, which had to be amputated because of the cancer. Along with the tissue, the surgeons inserted a metal plate to form the shoulder. This new surgery was able to form a shoulder which would allow Tom to wear a prosthetic arm, where before he wouldn’t be able to do so. This truly was a life changing surgery!
Another huge body reconstruction surgery was with Lakshmi from India. Lakshmi was named after the four legged Indian goddess, and the reason is uncanny. Lakshmi was born with an extra four legs, and an extra four arms, and multiple sets of internal organs. This was one of the first cases of a child born with multiple sets of limbs, which eventually would be amputated. When Lakshmi was 2 years old she underwent surgery. The surgery was supposed to take a little over forty hours, but after twenty seven hours, the surgeons were finished. The surgeons successfully amputated all eight extra limbs. The surgeons say
the extra internal organs, without removing the correct organs.
Although this was a near impossible surgery, the surgeons we able to remove the limbs, and correct the internal organs successfully. The doctors say that if this surgery wasn’t preformed Lakshmi would have been killed by the internal organs disarrangement when she went into adolescence.
A final case of miracle body reconstruction is with a pair of twins, who were at one point conjoined! Former conjoined twins Trishna and Krishna were released from a hospital in Australia after their surgery to disconnect each other. The surgery lasted little over thirty hours, and the two twins were successfully disconnected. The two twins were originally connected by the top of their heads, and it was difficult to remove the connection in such a sensitive spot. The surgery required sixteen different medical specialists. The surgery was unique as the two twins shared brain tissue and blood vessels. This made the surgery tremendously more difficult as the specialists had to carefully separate the two twins without destroying any of the DNA shared between the twins.
It is because of surgeries and miracles like this that are making the medical field the fastest growing field in science today. I know that throughout the years to come, there will be countless more cases of life saving body reconstructions.
