Are Scientific Inventions Making Us Happier?

Is there a reason to celebrate given that in these times, we possess at our mercy, a wide spectrum of gadgets and tools that mimic the play of gods, read only in myth? Indeed, we have never felt as close to god as now. But in order to gauge the extent of happiness ensuing from these inventions, the inevitable question that follows – “Is luxury contributing to happiness?”

Civilizations are a grandiose bloom of the sparks of ideas and beliefs envisioned in an architect’s mind. Sparks of inspiration with which he would have ignited the wildfire of a new conflagration, consuming all the minds, giving birth to a glorious chapter of illuminating civilization.

But what exactly drives the exponential growth of an idea into a civilization?

Every idea orchestrated can effectively result in two decisive responses from an ardent commoner, embarking this new path, namely, willingness or enthusiasm.

The former Willingmess, is born out of compliance in fear coupled with a self-defeated courage that only hints at a brewing storm; that would arrive one day unaware, in gigantic unquenchable proportions to topple years of hard work undergone in erecting this mighty monument of civilization. Enthusiasm on the other hand is the greatest inspiration for driving a man to any extent. It is the sole link between the origin and the realization, enough to sustain an ideal for eternity.

God for one has been the greatest inspiration; the elusive goal of humankind, erecting the most intriguing edifice of spirituality. But religion - an offspring of this inspiring ideal of god, soon underwent metamorphosis into humanity’s tryst in willingness with a burdensome past. Riding upon the waves of faith and fear, with beliefs beyond human comprehension, Spirituality as twisted religions, for long was the only civilization. A belief in these religions with uninterrupted acceptance was largely due to the authored classics handed down from the history featuring gods. Tales authored to perfection, to the extent of bringing to life, these legends of myth in the script.

Spirituality was a sublime blot of clouds, seemingly appearing to save humanity, in its shade. Though in truth, it rendered humanity bereft of its complete sunshine of happiness. Thus spirituality enjoyed the sole position atop the pedestal of civilization until the arrival of Science; the new Spark of innovation, of economy, of freedom, of hope for a happy future!

We’ve come a long way from the days of mystical belief to awareness in logic and reason, thanks to those courageous few who stood their ground, despite the opposition. In time, thanks to these curious minds, Science; today, is the birthplace of innovation that dishes out ‘luxury’ through its innumerable inventions that have made life more relaxed. And therefore, it enjoys an enviable position in the minds of the current civilization, threatening to upstage spirituality itself from its supreme pedestal. For in these times, we possess at our mercy, a wide spectrum of gadgets and tools that mimic the play of gods, read only in myth.

Indeed, we have never felt as close to god as now.

But in order to gauge the extent of happiness ensuing from these inventions, the inevitable question that follows – “Is luxury contributing to happiness?”

While Luxury is aptly synonymous to pleasure, happiness these days is falsely interpreted as pleasure. Pleasure is a transient commodity that could be purchased at a price, but, happiness is a lasting emotion, sans expression that ensues from the heart, born of even trivial experiences. The luring luxury that these products of scientific inventions bring along is verily a ‘hidden pain in pleasure’s clothing’. Indeed the price of this pleasure is your peace of mind.

Only in contemplation does one fathom ‘The inconvenient truth’; that these scientific inventions arrive, demanding a cruel price of consumption in greed.
